‘The Newcastle fans are amazing – I will keep those moments all my life’

Ahead of this afternoon’s match, Mathieu Debuchy has gone out of his way to say how great he thinks the Newcastle fans are.

The former United defender says he will treasure his time on Tyneside all of his life but many supporters will question the depth of his words, whatever his reasons for leaving.

After spending only 18 months at Newcastle, it isn’t as though he devoted a great deal of his career to the Newcastle fans that he is saying are so great.

Personally, I can understand Debuchy leaving for reasons of ambition but it was the way he did it that was unacceptable to me.

In advance of the World Cup he basically told us he wasn’t going to stay at Newcastle.

Giving an interview in France after finishing his season with United, Mathieu Debuchy said that he wanted to play in the Champions League and would sort his future out after the World Cup. From that moment we knew that no part of ‘sorting his future out’ would include staying at St.James’ Park.

He could have gone off to the World Cup and then only spoke once he’d agreed a deal elsewhere.

Mathieu Debuchy;

“The (Newcastle) fans are amazing and I will keep those moments all my life.

“It will be special to face them but it will be even more special later in the season when we play up there.”

Great memories…

“I had a great time at Newcastle, I can never thank the club and the fans enough for what they have done for me.

“I only have great memories from there. Thanks to them I discovered English football.

“I played in a great atmosphere in every home match.”

Luckily for Newcastle, Daryl Janmaat has hit the ground running and arguably been Newcastle’s best player, meaning Mathieu Debuchy hasn’t been missed at all.
