Mike Ashley cancels Christmas at Rangers
Two years ago Mike Ashley cancelled Christmas at Newcastle United and now he has repeated the dose at Rangers.
Christmas 2012 saw United in a relegation fight, and Ashley responded by not only cancelling the celebration for the players, but also punishing the ordinary staff who worked in admin, the ticket office etc.
Yesterday lunchtime, Mike Ashley’s henchman Derek Llambias sent a message to all non-football staff at Rangers, the contents of which informed them that their Christmas party was cancelled and a seasonal gift that each staff member usually gets.
Last year the staff received a £50 M & S voucher and their party was held in one of the suites at Ibrox.
In the Daily Record they quoted a source saying;
“We were given the news in an email from Llambias and it is another big blow to morale inside the club. We were told that these measures were being taken ‘due to the current financial position’.
“Llambias said it was ‘regrettable’ while thanking the staff for their hard work and commitment during what he described as ‘this difficult time’.”
The Scottish newspaper also related that Rangers had refused to comment but a source ‘close’ to the club had said;
“If one job can be saved by pulling the plug on the Christmas party then so be it.”
Whatever the rights and wrongs of cancelling Christmas, this episode does confirm one thing for sure.
Just who is pulling the strings at Rangers these days.
