Mehdi Abeid missing for up to six weeks

Mehdi Abeid will be missing for up to six weeks in the new year, the Newcastle midfielder having been named in Algeria’s squad for the African Cup of Nations.

Abeid of course was in line to make his full international debut, only to break a toe in training on the eve of the match.

Algeria are in Group C and have the following set of fixtures;

19 Jan – v South Africa

23 Jan – v Ghana

27 Jan – v Senegal

Great for the player after a pretty dismal few years at Newcastle, though Mehdi Abeid showed plenty of promise last season on loan in Greece, plus in his few appearances this season he’s really impressed.

Not so good news for Newcastle as there’s every chance he would have been a very useful player to have around in January and early February. It will be especially frustrating if Abeid ends up not even getting on the pitch during the tournament.

The 22 year old’s country will no doubt be facing Papiss Cisse in that final group match against Senegal. While Cheick Tiote will be in the Ivory Coast squad that also travels.

The tournament runs from January 17 to February 8 but past experience tells us that players disappear at the start of January, so the home match with Burnley on January 1 is very likely to be the last one before the trio head off.
