Massive weekend for Newcastle United and their neighbours
As well as Newcastle United hosting Premier League leaders Chelsea on Saturday, there is a massive weekend of football for some of our neighbours as well.
Gateshead and Blyth Spartans are the best of enemies but this weekend they share the same dream.
While the Pools are a number of levels higher than the visitors, with Hartlepool rooted to the bottom of League two and confidence shredded, Spartans will be dreaming of revisiting that adventure of 1977/78 when thousands were locked out of St.James’ Park as Wrexham beat them in a fifth round replay.
Just getting this far is massive for Blyth with cash going up every round, but a dream tie in the third round could really set them up, Friday night 7.55pm sees the two teams meet.
In Gateshead’s case, they ironically find themselves as massive favourites to go into the hat for the third round, with Sunday seeing the visit of Warrington Town who are actually a division lower than Blyth Spartans. Kick-off at the International Stadium is 12 noon on Sunday.
Best of luck to both north east clubs in joining Newcastle in the third round draw.
There is also a very special night laid on for you, a talk-in with Gateshead manager Gary Mills on Thursday 4th December at Gateshead Fell Cricket Club, an event compered by Radio Newcastle’s Matthew Raisbeck, with comedian Seth Shildon also on the bill, pie and peas included as well.
The tickets are only £10 and available from the cricket club in person, or by calling 0191 420 016, there are a still a few left but get in quick to avoid disappointment.
