Robbie Keane pips Obafemi Martins for top MLS award

Ex-Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martin was one of the finalists in line to pick up the award for most valuable player in Major League Soccer (MLS) but LA Galaxy Captain Robbie Keane has just pipped Martins with New England Revolution striker Lee Nguyen in third.

After a bit of a nomadic existence since leaving St.James’ Park, Martins appears to have finally found his niche at Seattle Sounders after moving there in March 2013.

The (allegedly!) thirty year old scored seventeen goals this past season and was credited with thirteen assists.

Nguyen scored eighteen times with five assists, while Keane made fourteen goals and scored nineteen.

The award was based on the compiled votes from MLS players, the media and club management.

The voting breakdown is below, with the percentages of how many of each group voted for the leading candidates.

Players votes 26% Media 32% Club 31% Robbie Keane

Players votes 16% Media 28% Club 19% Obafemi Martins

Players votes 17% Media 19% Club 21% Lee Nguyen

Players votes 22% Media 8% Club 20% Bradley Wright-Phillips
