Why is ‘Europe’ a dirty word for Newcastle United?
I note that it still sticks in the throat of the media pundits to mention Newcastle as possible candidates for Europe.
Southampton have of course repeatedly been lauded as possible Champions League candidates, most notably by ‘Tiz’ and his mates on Stelling’s football circus, and of course now that West Ham have won a couple they are also on their way to toppling all before them and racing into Europe. With big Andy suddenly a world beater and ‘unplayable’ now that he has eventually put a couple of headers away.
Ray Parlour ran through his list of Europe candidates on Sky Sports and studiously went down the Premiership, missing out Newcastle of course, and mentioned top four candidates such as ‘…Spurs and Everton…’
This is despite the fact that the latter are in the bottom half of the league and five points behind the Toon when I last looked at the table. Even our local pundits refuse to give the team any chance of Champions League qualification, with John Gibson, local sports reporter, ridiculing the idea recently on the Radio Newcastle fans phone in.

If you look at the present squad it is packed with internationals, plus a recent healthy additional sprinkling of young local players to give that added energy and passion missing at the end of last season.
United have just beaten the champions elect with a number of our key players still missing and are the form team of the Premiership.
We can’t expect the media pundits to change their tune, as European success does not fit their agenda about Newcastle.
However, let’s not fall into the trap of admitting that we are unrealistic in our expectations of what the team can achieve. That is for others to level at us.
Myself…..I am looking at a possible Cup Final and also a top six finish at least and I’m not frightened to trumpet the fact.
We are a great club capable of great things and let’s not be ashamed to shout it from the rooftops!!
