Alan Pardew ‘We needed to win to stay at the top of the league’

7 years ago

Alan Pardew has lamented the defeat to Sunderland, saying it was a critical fixture and result.

The Newcastle manager saying that his team needed to win the derby ‘to stay at the top of the league’.

If Newcastle had beaten the mackems then they would now stand eighth instead of ninth in the Premier League, which isn’t exactly top but is topper, if that’s the right word…

However, with those three points having now gone begging, Pardew says his players have to win at Old Trafford – the next [intlink id=”191″ type=”page”]Newcastle fixture[/intlink], or get a ‘result of some description’, which when you narrow it down must mean a draw or a defeat…

“We have to lick our wounds and go to Man United now, it’s tough for us – a tough run of games.

“We knew that and this was a critical fixture and a critical result really, we needed to win this to stay at the top of the league.

A result of ‘some description’ needed;

“That’s now been taken away from us and we have some really hard work to do.

“We are going to have to get a win against Manchester United or a result of some description, to keep us in and around that area.”
