Alan Pardew ‘It’s a famous day because they are best team in Europe’

7 years ago

Alan Pardew reflected on a day when he believes Newcastle beat the best team in Europe.

As usual the Newcastle manager talked up the opposition pre-match but on this occasion he was justified, with United taking on the league leaders who are/were threatening to run away with the Premier League title.

While the likes of Real Madrid and others might have something to say about the ‘best in Europe’ claims, Pardew explained that pre-match United had accepted that they had to cede the majority of possession to their opponents. The final stat (BBC Sport) showing 34% NUFC and 66% Chelsea

However, the Newcastle boss pointed out that this then meant the defence and goalkeeper(s) had to be on form and that was certainly the case.

Alan Pardew;

“It’s a special day, it’s a famous day, because they are the best team in Europe, probably.

“We decided we couldn’t dominate possession and therefore putting pressure on high up the pitch was going to be difficult for us, with the quality they have.”

Trust your back four and keeper;

“If you are going to do that then you really need to defend well and trust your back four and goalkeeper.

“Fortunately for us they were outstanding and we needed two goalies in the end!”
