Alan Pardew confirms Newcastle injuries – 10 missing for Manchester United
At his pre-match Manchester United press conference, Alan Pardew has confirmed that at least ten players will be missing from the selection process as he revealed there was no light at the end of the tunnel in terms of Newcastle injuries.
Cheick Tiote will be serving a one game suspension after the yellow card against Sunderland, while another nine will be missing through injury.
Both Jonas Gutierrez and Davide Santon will be missing as they have been for some time, Jonas getting 87 minutes of action for the under 21s yesterday. Pardew saying that Santon has been a big miss because of his ability to retain the ball.
Both keepers Tim Krul and Rob Elliot won’t be back until mid-January at the earliest, while Ryan Taylor, Siem De Jong and Gabriel Obertan are also looking towards sometime next month before we might see them in action.
Mehdi Abeid has still not started training again after his broken toe suffered on international duty, while Pardew says it is at least another three or four weeks before Rolando Aarons could be back.
So in essence it looks as though it is well into January before we’re likely to see any of the nine injured.
While in Cheick Tiote’s case, he will be back for the Everton and Burnley matches before heading off for the African Cup of Nations along with Papiss Cisse, and Mehdi Abeid if he’s fit enough.
As always, interesting to see how Mike Ashley reacts (or doesn’t) in the January transfer window to the short (injuries) and long-term (lack of depth and quality) problems in the squad.
