Toon fan and TV presenter Lynsey Hipgrave talks about Newcastle and Alan Shearer
Toon fan and TV presenter Lynsey Hipgrave has been talking about Newcastle United and meeting her heroes, with Alan Shearer top of the list.
In an interview with Turnstyle + Sport, the Geordie presenter who features on the likes of the BBC and BT Sport, reflects on the highs of the Brazil World Cup and the lows of seeing United lose at St.James’ Park.In a previous interview, Lynsey summed up her background as;
“Born and bred in Newcastle, where you support The Toon from conception, sport is part of my DNA.”
In the Turnstyle + Sport interview;
Who do you support and what is your earliest memory of football?
“Newcastle United. I remember going to St James’ Park with my dad and brother when I was about 8 and sitting in the family enclosure listening to commentary on a pair of headphones so I could couldn’t hear any of the swearing or rude songs!”
Did anything in particular lead you to pursue a career in broadcasting?
“I used to watch Saturday morning TV when I was a kid and think it looked like the best job in the world. I’ve loved football since I was little, my Dad made sure of that, so sports broadcasting seemed like the perfect career.”
If you could change one thing about football what would it be?
“I think transfer deadline day should be before the football season starts so every team knows their final squad. It’s not a level playing field the way it’s done now for example Newcastle could have to play Man United with Di Maria and Falcao in the side whereas another team could play them at the start of the season without them. It would also stop managers using it as an excuse saying they lost because of unsettled players or new players that haven’t had time to bed in.”
What was the last sporting event you went to as a fan?
“I was so lucky to be in Brazil for the World Cup and get to go to a lot of games with work but the last match I went to as a fan was Newcastle v Arsenal at St James’ Park last Christmas. We lost 1-0!”
Best bit about your job?
“The best bit is getting to watch and talk about football and other sporting events. I also get to work with loads of great people and have got to know a few legends like Alan Shearer.”
