Former Newcastle forward Michael Chopra has revealed that he’s been inspired after meeting Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Tendulkar is co-owner of the Kerala Blasters, the team Chopra plays for in the Indian Super League.

The Geordie striker says that the cricketing legend has given him every encouragement in his ambitions both in the Super League and potentially playing for the Indian national football team.

Speaking to Sky Sports Chopra explained how Tendulkar has attended team meetings to give his backing to Chopra and his teammates;

“He is willing to try and help me because he understands how passionate I am about helping develop football here in India and making the national team better.

“To have someone like Sachin willing to help is special, he is a cricket legend but he is not only interesting in improving cricket, he’s interested in improving football and sport as a whole in the country.

“He told me he’s read the stories about me wanting to play for India and has said he is willing to help me fulfill that desire if he can.”

Legend;

“You don’t realise how big Sachin is until you are actually in India.

“When his (Tendulkar’s) face appears on the screens inside the stadium the crowd go absolutely wild.

“He’s achieved so much and he’s so dedicated and he’s worked so hard to build that stature.”

Michael Chopra of course will always have his moment in Newcastle United history, coming on as a substitute and scoring after only a few seconds the equaliser against Sunderland.

The match proving to be Alan Shearer’s very final game, Newcastle running out 4-1 winners and just as bizarrely, Albert Luque also getting on the scoresheet, as well as Charles N’Zogbia and Alan Shearer from the spot.
