Ronaldo beats ex-Newcastle striker’s European Championship record

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner for Portugal against Armenia on Friday night, securing his country a vital three points in their qualification campaign for the European Championships in France in 2016.

However, in the process of scoring that goal, Ronaldo became the all-time top scoring in European Championship history.

Arguably the best player in the World, Ronaldo made it 23 goals in qualification and finals, moving one ahead of former Newcastle striker Jon Dahl Tomasson.

23 Cristiano Ronaldo

22 Jon Dahl Tomasson

22 Hakan Sukur

21 Robbie Keane

20 Davor Suker

The Danish striker is definitely one that got away where Newcastle United are concerned.

As well as his outstanding scoring exploits for Denmark, Tomasson went on to win the Dutch league title and UEFA Cup with Feyenoord, only to better that with a Serie A title and Champions League winners medal with AC Milan.

Jon Dahl Tomasson scored four goals in thirty five matches for Newcastle in his single 1997-98 season at St.James’ Park but that only tells one small part of the story.

The Danish striker/attacking midfielder had been outstanding in pre-season, showing exceptional link-up play with Alan Shearer.

However, Shearer then got that devastating injury at Goodison Park and the rest is history.

Combined with the daft decision to Les Ferdinand, Tomasson was left to plough a lone furrow, with only maverick Tino Asprilla for company, the Columbian not exactly being the ideal forward partner to help a young player new to the Premier League.

Tomasson was part of the team that defeated Barcelona 3-2 on that memorable night but if circumstances had been different, then I think this talented team player would have been a massive asset to Newcastle United and given us so much more.

Can you think of any players who can beat Jon Dahl Tomasson in terms of being the one that got away from United? Suggestions welcome below.
