Newcastle linked with move for the ‘Serbian Ibrahimovic’
Newcastle United are being linked with a move in January for a player described as the Serbian Ibrahimovic.
There are widespread reports that United want to sign the twenty year old Anderlecht forward Aleksander Mitrovic to give the squad some much needed extra fire power.
The striker made a real name for himself when he scored the dramatic late equaliser last week against Arsenal in the Champions League, the Gunners having led 3-0. Ironically, Arsenal were strongly linked with a move for him before he headed to Belgium last year.
The Serbian was so highly rated in his home country he was playing and scoring for his country as an eighteen year old.
Scoring 16 league goals last season for Anderlecht, Mitrovic has scored another 11 goals already this season in all competitions, including that one at The Emirates.
Some of the reports suggest that he could be available for around £5m which is of course laughable, contracted until 2018 and having easily made the step up to the Belgian league and now making a name in the Champions League, it will take serious money to land him.
Despite that late equaliser against Arsenal, Anderlecht are all but mathematically out of the Champions League so the Belgian club won’t have that as an extra factor in wanting to hold onto him.
Obviously competition would be fierce if Newcastle went in for him but this is exactly the sort of signing that could really take United forward, if Mike Ashley shows the ambition that was missing in the summer transfer market.
