The man who should be first name on Newcastle team sheet v West Ham

I’m not his biggest fan but surely it is a no-brainer that Mike Williamson plays this afternoon.

The centre-back has transparent weaknesses in his game but he always gives 100% and should be the first name on Alan Pardew’s team sheet today.

I saw the fans’ choice of Newcastle team went up this morning and on any other day I wouldn’t have disagreed that Paul Dummett should keep the shirt and be partnered with a returning from injury Fabricio Coloccini.

However, today we are guaranteed to be facing Andy Carroll, due to Sakho and Valencia being injured, and playing anybody but Williamson to mark him is just plain daft.

We know big Mike is terrified of the ball at his feet but throw it up in air and he is easily our best chance of countering the former Newcastle striker’s strength in the air.

Whether it is Dummett or Coloccini alongside him I don’t really mind, plus it will have a lot to do with Colo’s fitness after a short break out.

Williamson and Dummett did well against the in-form Charlie Austin and Bobby Zamora partnership last week so I’d be tempted to stick with them.

This is a team selection that could decide today’s match, who would you choose?
