A  major boost for Cheick Tiote but bad news for Newcastle United.

The United midfielder’s international teammates have given the injured player a big lift by demolishing Sierra Leone in their latest African Cup of Nations qualifier.

Winning 5-1, the result puts Cheick Tiote and the Ivory Coast on the brink of qualification.

Third placed DR Congo play group leaders Cameroon tomorrow and defeat for them would mean Ivory Coast going into their final match three points clear and at least three goals better on goal difference.

Earlier today it was confirmed the finals of the African Cup of Nations were definitely going ahead, with Equatorial Guinea agreeing to be emergency late hosts after Morocco refused to host as per the schedule due to worries over the spread of Ebola.

Alan Pardew has indicated he is hopeful Tiote will be available again for the QPR match a week on Saturday, although it will be interesting to see what happens in the competition for places with the likes of Mehdi Abeid who has starred in recent games.

The African Cup of Nations finals are scheduled for 17 January to 8 February but previous tournaments have seen players miss up to six weeks of Premier League action.
