First game in over 3 years and is man of the match Newcastle v Liverpool
After almost three and a half years at St.James’ Park, Mehdi Abeid played his first Premier League minutes and promptly ended up as our clear man of the match Newcastle v Liverpool.
One of the stars of United’s win at the Etihad on Wednesday, it must have come as much of a shock for Mehdi Abeid to get his chance, as it did to Alan Pardew when the player had such an impact over the last week.
The Newcastle manager had made clear the midfielder was surplus to requirements and allowed him to go to Panathinaikos on loan, with Abeid being a real hit as he scored double figures over the season and helped his on loan club to win a cup and qualify for the early rounds of the Champions League.
In Cheick Tiote’s absence, Alan Pardew showed a belated openness against Liverpool to the idea of leaving out the likes of Gouffran, Anita and others who have disappointed, then reaping the rewards with another three points.
What is especially good to see in the man of the match votes from the fans, in my opinion, is that three of the four highest ratings are for midfielders.
For me, the heart of midfield is where most matches are won and lost and when Cabaye & Tiote were in there, it is little surprise Newcastle did so well.
Colback has stayed steady and Sissoko has really come into his own in recent matches, with Abeid adding to the mix Newcastle suddenly look to have real possibilities in the middle of the pitch.
