Cruel injury for rising Newcastle star on international duty

A cruel injury blow for Newcastle midfielder Mehdi Abeid on international duty.

After starring in wins over Manchester City and Liverpool, Abeid had received his first international call-up for Algeria – perfect timing with the African Cup of Nations only two months away and Algeria already qualified.

Reports in the French media say that Mehdi Abeid had been selected to start for Algeria against Ethiopia on Saturday night, only for a shock injury in training to deny him his international debut.

A challenge by teammate Belkalem Esseid left the Newcastle midfielder with a toe injury and later he was photographed on crutches and no shoe on his injured right foot.

Abeid was replaced in the team by Taider Sliti Saphir and despite Ethiopia taking the lead, Algeria made it five wins out of five as they ran out 3-1 winners.

Sadly for Mehdi Abeid he was only a spectator, with initial reports suggesting he will be out injured for at least a month.
