More bad news out of Africa for Newcastle United

There has been some more bad news out of Africa for Newcastle United, following both Senegal and Algeria qualifying and Mehdi Abeid’s injury.

Assuming Abeid quickly recovers from his broken toe, there is every chance that both he and Papiss Cisse will miss up to six weeks of the middle of Newcastle’s season for the African Cup of Nations finals in January/February.

On top of that, while Cheick Tiote is relaxing back on Tyneside, his Ivory Coast teammates held on for a desperate point on Wednesday night against group winners Cameroon.

That was the difference between qualifying and not, as their rivals for second place qualification were DR Congo and they won 3-1 against Sierra Leone with the the help of two goals from Crystal Palace’s Yannick Bolasie.

So Newcastle now face the prospect of three first team players missing for up to 6 weeks, the tournament starting 17 January and ending 8 February, though players usually head off in early January for training camps.

Papiss Cisse made a goalscoring return on Wednesday night as Senegal beat Botswana in a dead rubber, you can watch the Newcastle striker’s goal HERE.
