Aleksandar Mitrovic is Newcastle’s priority signing in January – Reports
There are reports tonight that Newcastle United have Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic as their priority signing in the January transfer window.
Mitrovic has been described as the ‘Serbian Ibrahimovic’ and was signed for £4m in summer 2013 from Partizan Belgrade.
The striker made a real name for himself when he scored the dramatic late equaliser earlier this month against Arsenal in the Champions League, the Gunners having led 3-0. Ironically, Arsenal were strongly linked with a move for him before he headed to Belgium last year.
Now The Telegraph are claiming that their information is that Newcastle have made Mitrovic a priority signing in January ahead of Marseille’s Andre-Pierre Gignac, who United have been regularly linked with.
The report also says that while United clearly need another striker regardless, ongoing worries about Papiss Cisse’s recovery from his serious knee injury make the need for a forward to be signed, all the more acute.
The Serbian was so highly rated in his home country he was playing and scoring for his country as an eighteen year old.
Scoring 16 league goals last season for Anderlecht, Mitrovic has scored another 11 goals already this season in all competitions, including that one at The Emirates.
Some of the reports have said that he could be available for around £5m which is of course laughable, contracted until 2018 and having easily made the step up to the Belgian league and now making a name in the Champions League, it will take serious money to land him.
The Telegraph suggest a fee of between £8m and £10m could be enough to tempt the Belgian club to double their money.
