Newcastle v Leicester goes ahead with delayed kick-off

Giant screen fixed and Newcastle v Leicester match now goes ahead at 4pm, turnstiles opening at 3.15pm.

With only a few minutes to go before the scheduled 3pm kick-off, the turnstiles still weren’t opened due to safety concerns with the giant screen ‘flapping’ in the wind and creating possible danger for fans.

The giant screen was due to be unveiled today so Mike Ashley could force more free advertising for Sports Direct down the throats of all fans and any TV viewers he can capture.

Just like the running of Newcastle United overall – laughable!

These were the messages the club sent out;

3.03pm UPDATE: Kick-off has been delayed until 4pm. Turnstiles will be open at 3:15pm. Thank you for your patience.

2.39pm We will bring you updates including any information on turnstiles and a revised kick-off time as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience

2.39 pm Turnstiles at SJP are currently closed due to safety concerns relating to panels surrounding the LED screen. We apologise for the delay.

2.32pm We apologise for the inconvenience caused. We will bring you further information as soon as it is available.

2.31pm An engineer is on site and will make a full appraisal at approximately 3pm. Further information will be available as soon as possible.

1.45pm NUFC can confirm that there is a short delay in turnstiles opening whilst an issue with the new LED screen is addressed. Update to follow.

Miles Starforth of the Shields Gazette had reported that if the screen could’t be made safe after a ‘Structural assessment’ then the game would have had to be called off.

Whether we are wishing it had been after the final whistle remains to be seen…
