Newcastle linked with move for Sam Byram

Newcastle have been linked with a move for defender Sam Byram.

The twenty one year old right-back has established him at Leeds United over the last couple of years, playing almost one hundred matches already for the Yorkshire club.

Newcastle were first linked with the defender in the lead up to the League Cup clash between the two clubs just over a year ago, with reports back then that United were monitoring his progress.

Obviously Newcastle are very thin on the ground at right-back, having seen left-back Paul Dummett already having to deputise there for Daryl Janmaat.

Football League World have reported that Newcastle scouts were at Carrow Road on Tuesday to watch Byram, with Leeds forcing a decent draw against on of the pace setters in the Championship.

Byram played the full ninety minutes and performed well, though Newcastle may have competition if they pursue an interest with Arsenal already having had him watched.

Newcastle are said to see him as a longer term option and there is a chance that Sam Byram could potentially be targeted in January, then instantly loaned back to Leeds for at least the rest of the season.

If Newcastle are ever to have a growing core of English players in the team then risking money on players who are still developing, looks the most viable option under Mike Ashley’s tight budget.
