Newcastle linked with January move for the top goalscorer in France
Newcastle United have once again been linked with a move for Andre-Pierre Gignac.
The Marseille striker has been regularly named as a Newcastle target over the last two years but it does look as though a move is imminent, whether to Newcastle or wherever, with the striker’s five year contract coming to an end in June.
Exactly how ‘cut price’ Gignac will actually be is open to question, even though he turns 29 in December he is bang on top of his form and is leading goalscorer in Ligue 1, his ten goals firing Marseille to the very top of the league, four points clear of PSG and Yohan Cabaye.
Andre-Pierre Gignac is also back in favour with the national set-up, leading the line for France against Armenia in their latest friendly, the striker was man of the match as he scored one and made one in a 3-0 victory as France prepare to host the Euros in 2016.
If Newcastle were able to sign a top striker such as this (the kind that should have been bought in the summer) in January, then it would go a long way towards giving us hope that Mike Ashley might have learnt you can’t gamble on leaving things short up front.
With Papiss Cisse having ongoing injury problems and likely to miss 4-6 weeks anyway with the African Nations Cup in the new year, United simply must invest in a quality striker in January.
Whether that is Andre-Pierre Gignac remains to be seen but what is sure, is that we desperately need one.
