Michael Owen says worst possible time for Liverpool to play Newcastle

6 years ago

Michael Owen says that Newcastle United were never really in relegation trouble as they were in a false position in the league.

The former Newcastle striker claims that Liverpool would have really been looking forward to the fixture but that United’s recent victories have changed the complexion of the game.

According to Michael, Newcastle are fluent going forward and can defend pretty well.

I’m sure he was saying all of this two weeks ago…

Michael Owen speaking to the official Premier League site;

“It is a really hard place to play when Newcastle are in flying form and after the last couple of wins everyone will be in a lot brighter mood.

“It’s a unique club. When times are good then it’s a great feel good factor at the stadium. The fans really make some noise and it’s a great stadium.  “

Great history;

“It’s just got a history of good games, this fixture. Both teams have got a great history and a great pedigree of playing attacking football, and you always expect goals.

“Back to back victories in this league doesn’t half shoot you up the table and Newcastle and their fans will be looking upwards rather than down at the moment.”

The tails are up;

“I am sure Liverpool were rubbing their hands together for the last few weeks, saying, ‘This is a great time to play Newcastle’. Now, all of a sudden, it’s the worst time because their tails are up again and they are playing with a lot of confidence.”

Newcastle in a false position;

“Newcastle are in a false position anyway. Everyone looks at the players and the team and probably say Newcastle are a mid to top-half side and it was only a matter of time, but I am sure Alan Pardew’s relieved that it has turned.”

Pretty good defence and fluent attack;

“Newcastle can mix it up. I often watch them and they are never too reliant on one set way of playing. They can grind results out, they can defend pretty well and they can look fluent going forward as well, so they are quite adaptable.”
