Embarrassment Complete For Pardew As France Call Up Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa
Just when you thought the embarrassment factor couldn’t go higher for Alan Pardew in his handling of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa…it has.
January 2013 saw Newcastle sign one of the rising stars of French football, at the age of only 22 Mapou had captained unfashionable Montpellier throughout the 2011/12 season and led them to the Ligue 1 title.
Mapou then met Alan Pardew, was almost totally ignored in his true position of centre-back and became a reserve full-back at St.James’ Park.
There was as much chance of one of us featuring in Brazil this summer as poor Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.
In the space of a month, respected French manager Rudi Garcia has Mapou at the heart of his defence, putting in man of the match performances in Serie A and marking Dzeko out of the game when facing Manchester City in the Champions League.
Now the turnaround is complete with Didier Deschamps recognising Mapou’s rehabilitation and calling him up for France as a replacement for Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny, who has problems with his Achilles tendons.
France play Portugal on Saturday and Armenia on Tuesday- what a difference a month makes after escaping the clutches of Alan Pardew.
