Derek Llambias plays it for laughs ‘I’m just one of many applicants’
While Sunday’s win at Spurs relieved pressure, at least temporarily , at Newcastle United – north of the border Mike Ashley has sent Derek Llambias into action.
Arriving at Glasgow Airport on Monday night, the former Newcastle United Chief Executive Office was met by a posse of reporters.
“Mike Ashley has got a great track record but I can’t give you any comment. I’d love to but I can’t.
“I’ve been invited up here to have discussions with the board and I’m just one of many applicants.
“I’m just looking forward to meeting the Rangers board at some point”
With Ashley now having forced the removal of both the Finance Director and Chief Executive at Rangers in return for an emergency loan, it is seen as a formality that Llambias will shortly be confirmed as the main man at Rangers and Mike Ashley will be visibly and in reality, in charge at Rangers. With the Newcastle owner also due to appoint one of his people as Finance Director.
While Ashley has an agreement with the Scottish FA to keep his Rangers shareholding no higher than 10% while he still owns Newcastle, these latest moves which effectively give him control of the Glasgow club, go way beyond influence as a small shareholder.
How this chaos in Scotland impacts on us as Newcastle United fans, remains to be seen.
