Another Injury Blow For Newcastle United
Daryl Janmaat has been forced to pull out of the Netherlands squad due to a hamstring injury.
The Newcastle full-back was in the Dutch squad to face Kazakhstan and Iceland in European Championship qualifiers but after being ruled out, Augsburg defender Paul Verhaegh has been called up as a replacement.
For the player to be ruled out of these crucial qualifiers (Holland lost their opening group match against the Czech Republic) at such an early stage suggests that it is more than a minor worry.
Obviously we are only really concerned from a Newcastle angle and this is pretty disastrous if it proves to be a longer term injury.
Daryl Janmaat has been easily Newcastle’s most reliable defender (which doesn’t say much..!) this season and until Papiss Cisse’s recent return the Dutch right-back has also often looked our most likely goalscorer as well!
With no obvious cover at right-back due to Mike Ashley’s failure to strengthen the squad properly, we could face the sight of left-footed Paul Dummett switching over to the right as he did at Crystal Palace.
While another possible is midfielder Vurnon Anita who was dropped after the opening matches and hasn’t started a game after the Southampton shambles.
