Alan Pardew ‘Newcastle Are A Big Scalp For Any Team’

6 years ago

As Newcastle fans we are often (unjustly) called deluded and to have ideas above our station.

The reality is that 99% of supporters know that competing against the likes of Manchester City and others is a tough ask but all we want is the club to run in the most ambitious way possible.

However, where our manager is concerned it is different matter.

Finding yet another reason as to why it is so tough for Alan Pardew getting results, the United boss has claimed that Newcastle are a big scalp for any team.

The inference being that when playing against a ‘big scalp’ like Newcastle, the other teams will try that little but harder.

Alan Pardew;

“This club needs big players because we are a big scalp for any team.

“For Swansea, we would be a big scalp, forget where we are in the league. We need big players and our big players need to stand up.”

So where exactly are we in the scalping order?

I think that when other clubs think of Newcastle the only thing that they think of as big, is the number of fans that still follow the team, no matter what Mike Ashley throws at them. Fifty thousand at home games and great away support.

As for Alan Pardew’s claims…

I would say other players and fans would see beating Arsenal, the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea as bigger ‘scalps’ than Newcastle.

Sadly I think most will now see Everton also as a bigger one than Newcastle, despite their current (temporary I’m sure) league position.

So where does that leave us…well I think the likes of Southampton and Swansea clearly have better players than United, while when it comes to spending money on players you have to accept that those two and the likes of West Ham, Hull and others are investing far more money in their squads.

I think at best we are seen as an oddity by others, a bizarre experiment whereby Mike Ashley is seeing just how far he can push the fans and the club’s position in the Premier League, before everything implodes.

One day we might again be the ‘bug scalp’ that Alan Pardew talks about but I can only see that coming about what Ashley has gone and taken his willing front man with him.
