Video Flashback: 17 Years Ago Today The Proof That Dreams Can Come True At NUFC

The present mood across Tyneside at the moment, is a little down to say the least.

An under strength squad with no desperately needed credible striker or central defender added in the summer, and resentment to manager and owner growing by the day, little wonder Newcastle fans are fearing the worst in the coming days and months.

However, 17 years ago today, the Newcastle eleven on the pitch that night showed just what could be done by pulling together.

Newcastle v Barcelona in the Champions League on 17 September 1997 and with Shearer long-term injured, on top of Dalglish selling Ginola, Beardsley, Elliott, Clark and Ferdinand, it looked as though it would take a miracle to defeat Figo, De La Pena, Sonny Anderson, Sergi, Miguel, Enrique, Rivaldo and the rest.

Well it wasn’t quite a miracle but he was called Tino Asprilla, who along with Keith Gillespie put in his best ever performance for Newcastle United and landed a 3-2 victory, which you can enjoy watching all over again below.

Of course Dalglish’s demolition of Keegan’s team and selling off some of Newcastle’s best players, whilst replacing them with inferior cut price replacements (sounds familiar…) was only going to send us one way longer (months!) term.

In fact not many fans remember that only four months after this hat-trick, Kenny sold Tino Asprilla.

Nobody though can ever take away from all of who were there, memories of a night never to be forgotten.

Newcastle lined up;

Shay Given

Warren Barton

Philippe Albert

Steve Watson

John Beresford

Keith Gillespie

Robert Lee

David Batty

John Barnes (Temuri Ketsbaia 81 mins)

Jon Dahl Tomasson (Darren Peacock 78 mins)

Tino Asprilla
