Sweet FA Cup – The Net Widens On The Way To Wembley
Four Newcastle fans came up with a win/win idea, to reinvigorate their love affair with the FA Cup, whilst at the same time raising valuable funds for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
Coinciding with the kick-off of the Premier League on Saturday 16 August, the FA Cup also started on that Saturday with the Extra Preliminary round, the first of fourteen stages of the 143 year old famous Cup competition, with the fourteenth obviously being the final at Wembley.
The four friends (Wayne Soulsby, Mac Crawford, Pete Hind and Malcolm Larkin) started at Newcastle Benfield v Penrith AFC (whoever won that tie, Malcolm and friends would go and watch in the next round, then the winner of that tie and so on – all the way to the final) to kick off their Cup adventure. They are paying for all of their own travel and costs, with any monies raised going directly to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
Sunshine blazing, canny crowd gathering and it’s our 3rd stage of the FA Cup!
We were at Newcastle Benfield again (3rd home game in a row) vs Bridlington Town.
The winners would go into the 2nd qualifying round on Monday afternoon.
An absolutely cracking game which saw Newcastle Benfield go into the break 1-0 and in fairness it could have been 2 or 3 more.
The second half started and Benfield continued where they left off bringing the score to 2-0 about 10 minutes in. On the 62nd minute after some sustained pressure, Brid pulled one back, and the tie certainly looked a lot more open.
However, Paul Brayson scored a late penalty for Benfield to put the tie beyond doubt and book the team’s place in the next round… now the wait starts for the draw to be made.
Fast forward 48hrs and The FA posted the fixtures, glancing down we were the tenth fixture to be drawn…away.
We’ve had a good run traveling from Monument to Newcastle Benfield’s ground and like I said in my last post, it felt like a road trip was on the cards sooner rather than later… so off we go to Buxton FC, SK17 postcode, 150 miles each way!
Let’s pick a team in the FA Cup he said, follow the winners to Wembley he said, it will be fun he said…
Well we are certainly getting what we asked for, a chance to visit places and meet people we wouldn’t normally get the chance to do so!
So we are definitely up and running for the challenge ahead, the winners of this game reach the penultimate round before the big lads start showing up.
All to play for and we can’t wait.
Please remember we are doing this all in aid of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. Everything you donate goes directly to them! We are paying for our own travel and tickets to the games.
