Sunderland Relegated and Newcastle Stability In Football Observatory Predictions

The CIES Football Observatory have now presented their predictions for the big five European leagues.

Their predictions are based on analysis of player profile data (matches played and results achieved), ‘prolifigacy’ (goals scored and level of the competition), and the ’stability’ (number of seasons with club and the years remaining on contract).

Their predictions are usually pretty reliable, give or take the odd exception that proves the rule; their data predicted Manchester United to win the Premier League last season…

Last season they predicted 8th for Newcastle and the actual finish was 10th, while Sunderland finished 14th after a prediction of 16th.

Past seasons have regularly seen their computer model between two and three positions out on average.

This season they have predicted the following final placings;

  1. Chelsea
  2. Manchester City
  3. Liverpool
  4. Arsenal
  5. Manchester United
  6. Everton
  7. Tottenham
  8. Southampton
  9. Leicester
  10. Stoke
  11. Newcastle United
  12. West Brom
  13. West Ham
  14. Burnley
  15. Aston Villa
  16. Swansea
  17. Hull
  18. Crystal Palace
  19. Sunderland
  20. QPR

I’d settle for the above for Newcastle AND Sunderland at this precise moment in time.
