Papiss Cisse Moves Into Top 13 Leading NUFC Premier League Goalscoring List
While it is a ‘little’ unlikely that Papiss Cisse will top Alan Shearer and become Newcastle United’s Premier League top goalscorer, he certainly has eleven others to aim at.
Cisse became the clear thirteenth highest goalscorer in Newcastle’s Premier League era when he hit the brace against Hull.
The stand out figures amongst the mixture below include outstanding out and out strikers who were here for a relatively short time, such as Andy Cole and Les Ferdinand.
Plus, midfielders or support strikers who stuck around a bit longer – Beardsley, Solano, Lee and Gary Speed prominent amongst those, plus of course Shola who was here for a ‘few’ seasons.
The one that stands out for me is Demba Ba in terms of this Pardew era, I think if he had remained at the club then there’s every chance that by now he would have overtaken Beardsley and be clear second behind Alan Shearer.
At the same time this would have brought a much needed stability to United and a solid base to build a team around.
What the list also reminds you of naturally, is that there is no substitute for real quality up front.
Papiss Cisse may have his rough edges but so much responsibility rests on his shoulders after the short-sighted and potentially disastrous transfer dealings up front this summer.
148 Alan Shearer
46 Peter Beardsley
43 Andy Cole
43 Shola Ameobi
41 Les Ferdinand
37 Nobby Solano
34 Robert Lee
29 Demba Ba
29 Gary Speed
28 Obafemi Martins
27 Craig Bellamy
26 Michael Owen
25 Papiss Cisse
