Newcastle Roll Out Coloccini To Try and Give Them Cover

Newcastle United are throwing everything at it, in terms of trying to deflect the planned (and unplanned) fan protests at the match on Saturday, with Captain Fabricio Coloccini now rolled out to try and give them cover.

The club have released the quotes below from Saturday’s programme to clearly try and help head off, or at least dilute, the anger which will be aimed at Alan Pardew and to a degree, the players themselves, as they are no innocents considering how tamely they collapsed at Southampton.

In fact Coloccini himself is a pale shadow of what he was over two years ago, both as a player and as a figurehead.

Since that 2011/12 season when he was included in the PFA team of the season, his contribution on the pitch has been average to woeful much of the time.

While trying to jump ship halfway through that near miss with relegation ion 2012/13 diminished him in the eyes of many fans, despite the unbelievable restraint supporters showed in not publicly having a go at him when he returned to the team.

So I just wonder what impact these words below Coloccini, will have and whether they will help or even hinder Ashley and Pardew in weathering thebacklash from fans.

“It will not be an easy game because Hull are a good team.

“It’s very important you are right behind us and support the team and players who are on the pitch.

“You want to win every game, just like us, and we all want the best for this football club.

“We are football fans too and so we understand that things can get frustrating, but please, support the team for ninety minutes inside the stadium, we need your support.

“We have a lot of new players and a young squad, they need your backing, a push from you and a positive atmosphere to get the best out of them.

“Hopefully you can cheer us on to three points and give our season a real boost.”
