Newcastle Outbid Stoke For Striker
Mark Hughes has revealed that Newcastle United outbid Stoke in the summer for striker Emmanuel Riviere.
The Stoke boss says that despite offering ‘decent money’, Riviere showed no interest in joining the Potters rather than Newcastle United.
“We had conversations with people close to him (Riviere).
“There was an indication that he may be available this summer so we pursued it to a certain extent.
“We offered decent money but there has to be a feeling that the enthusiasm we have for a certain player, is reciprocated. We did not get that from either the player or his advisers.”
Hughes has also stated how much more difficult it is for creative players and strikers to quickly find their way in the Premier League, believing that with time Emmanuel Riviere can prove a hit at Newcastle United.
“It’s easier for defenders and midfielders to come to a new league and integrate themselves, but is more difficult for creative and attacking players, because they ae expected to win you football matches and so it is harder to hit the ground running.
“I have a lot of respect for his ability and he will be a good player in the Premier League, though it’s not easy coming to a new country.”
Hopefully on the back of his Cup goals in midweek, Riviere can now go on a run of form and goals, starting in the Premier League with Hughes and Stoke tonight.
