Have Newcastle Let Goalscoring Midfielder They Desperately Need Slip Through The Net?

Alan Pardew constantly bemoans the absence of a goalscoring midfield player at the moment but have we let one slip through our fingers?

One of the top goalscoreres in the Capital One Cup this season is a certain Dan Gosling and he also scored a couple of goals when on a short-term loan to Blackpool last season. Indeed Paul Ince was moved to compare him with no less that Bryan Robson at one stage.

I always felt like a voice in the wilderness in saying that Gosling should have been given a decent run in the Newcastle side when with us.

He has much better physical attributes to meet the demands of the Premiership than such players as Anita and will certainly pose more of a goal threat. Gosling was an outstanding prospect at Everton but was never really match fit during his time with us.

Maybe now he is playing himself up to that fitness level and we are seeing the real Dan Gosling begin to emerge.

I get the feeling that if Pardew does not ‘fancy’ a player then he has no chance, with both Gosling and Mapou falling into that category.

Is Gosling really not a better prospect than Obertan who again is beginning to emerge on the team sheet?

I will follow Gosling’s progress with interest throughout the season and wonder whether a future expensive move to a Premiership club will show the folly of our decision in his case.
