Middlesbrough v Newcastle 2001 – Video Flashback
Thirteen years ago to the day, it was Middlesbrough v Newcastle at the Riverside.
Sir Bobby Robson facing Steve Maclaren in a ‘kind of’ derby for Newcastle fans but of course a much bigger match for the home fans.
Warren Barton (Andy O’Brien 77)
Craig Bellamy (LuaLua 81)
Alan Shearer (Shola 81)
A crowd of 30,004 saw Boro take an early lead, only to be crushed 4-1 by the final whistle, goals for Robert, Dabizas and Shearer (2).
Interesting to see this video footage for a number of reasons, the main one being the superb Laurent Robert. No doubt a player that would have been binned by Alan Pardew for not being a permanent extra full-back.
Happily Sir Bobby knew what he was doing and this match saw Laurent Robert make three goals and score the other.
Look at the quality deliveries into the box from Robert and also see the number of players that United get in the box, plus of course how quickly the team could break and turn defence into attack.
Nobby Solano and Laurent Robert were a superb combination on the flanks and the team was all about getting forward and causing the opposition problems.
