Mapou Faces Manchester City In Champions League Instead Of Carlisle Reserves
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa has been named in the starting eleven for AS Roma to face Manchester City in the Champions League tonight.
The centre-back’s head must be spinning after playing in the last three Serie A matches for his on-loan side, being named man of the the match at the weekend in the win over Verona, whilst also being the [intlink id=”48085″ type=”post”]top rated defender at Roma so far this season[/intlink]. Of course it has helped that Rudi Garcia has been playing Mapou in his true position of centre-half.
If the French international hadn’t been jettisoned by Alan Pardew, no doubt he would have been on the bench at best for the defeat at Stoke last night, though no doubt he would have had a run out in the [intlink id=”48190″ type=”post”]behind closed door match against Carlisle reserves[/intlink] earlier today. How he must regret leaving…
A big test for Mapou and his new teammates this week and we will have a better idea how the defender is faring after these next two matches, following tonight’s game against City the team from Rome face title rivals Juventus at the weekend. Both clubs having won five out of five and already pulled a number of points clear at the top.
I’ve had a laugh in recent days when news of Mapou’s excellent form has been reported in England, with a number of Newcastle fans going down the line of the Italian league is rubbish and predictable Mapou is doing better there etc etc and he still wasn’t good enough for us and so on.
What I would say to them is hand on heart, do they really believe that either Steven Taylor or Mike Williamson could have gone to Rome and done a similar job?
