French Fans Have Their Say On Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa Move

The Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa story is a strange one, even by Newcastle United standards.

His signing in January 2013 was the most expensive of the five and possibly the most exciting.

A rising star of French football who had captained minnows Montpellier to the French title at the age of only twenty two and who was getting established in the national squad.

It looked a real coup for Newcastle to have scooped such a player.

From the start though, Mapou struggled for games, especially in his centre-back role.

Maybe the writing was on the wall then already, despite being a team fighting relegation and leaking goals alarmingly, he couldn’t get a regular place in the team.

A year and a half later, Mapou still hasn’t been given a run in the team in his centre of the defence position, apparently written off by Alan Pardew despite the horrendous number of goals conceded in the second half of last season with Williamson and Coloccini the first choice pair.

With a total personal relationship breakdown reportedly on top of the selection problems,[intlink id=”46791″ type=”post”] Mapou now finds himself at Champions League competing AS Roma,[/intlink] who finished second in Serie A last season.

The Italian club were revitalised by Rudi Garcia in his first season and now in his second he’s given Mapou a fresh start, initially on loan.

Garcia was the talented manager who put together the great Lille team who won the double with the likes of Cabaye, Debuchy and Hazard.

How though do the French footballing public see the reunion of Mapou with Garcia?

We asked our top translator Pierre to have a look over in France and these are some of the reactions of football fans back home on the L’Equipe website;

He left too soon, one more season at Montpellier would have helped him, but he made a bad choice going to Newcastle.

At Roma, Garcia will get him back on track.

Everyone cannot succeed…that’s life. He took a risk and it did not work.

To think this overpriced player has been an international, I still can’t believe it!!!

Lucky for us that he did not come to OM (Marseille). He was already struggling in England and in Italy it will be worse.

An international?

(In reply) Yes and first 11, you need to get out at weekends!

A good defender who lost his way in England

Overpriced defender.

(In reply) He was not overpriced when he played for Montpellier!!

Yeah he was ok at Montpellier but a long way from the top 10 of defenders in Ligue 1.

I think it is a good deal around 1million euros, with option to buy for 5, nothing to lose.

I hope that Garcia did not go to Roma to give a second wind to the ones who have lost it.

Excellent at Montpellier, he lost himself at Newcastle. I hope Garcia can sort him out.

Lucky him.
