Daryl Janmaat’s Newcastle Style Defending Sinks Holland – Watch Here

7 years ago

It looks like Newcastle United’s comical defending in their last match has had an adverse affect on Daryl Janmaat.

Newcastle conceded three shocking goals against Crystal Palace in a desperate defensive performance, with Janmaat possibly the only defender emerging with any credit at all.

However, he took centre stage on Tuesday night when Holland travelled to the Czech Republic for a tough European Championship qualifier.

A great finish by Dockal for the hosts, had then been matched by an equally good Stefan de Vrij header, the match seemingly destined for a decent point for both teams.

However, a cross in the 90th minute saw a moment of madness from Daryl Janmaat, attempting an overly ambitious header back to his keeper, instead he hit it beyond Cillessen and onto the post, leaving Vaclav Pilar with the easiest of finishes (Watch the nightmare goal below).

After the match, Janmaat was quick to accept the blame;

“This is my fault and it is inexcusable.

“It was a big mistake, I wanted to head the ball back to Jasper (Cillessen) but I didn’t hit it well.

“I’ve now scored a sort of own goal and feel very bad about it, it felt like the ground had been swept away from under me.

“The Czech Republic away isn’t easy but we had to win this one.”
