Claims Newcastle Turned Down Aaron Lennon
While the transfer window may have closed, there’s still no let-up on the transfer speculation front with the latest being; Aaron Lennon was allegedly offered to Newcastle United.
However, the media reports also name a handful of other Premier League clubs as being offered the Tottenham winger, so not as if we had a special angle in terms of offering the player a new home.
With Spurs always being overstocked on the winger/midfield front and constantly trading them in and out, it is no surprise to see Lennon linked with other clubs, just as Townsend was during this last window.
Any possibility of Newcastle having interest in Lennon would surely have been killed off instantly with the wages the winger will be on.
One thing I was surprised at when checking up on the player, is that he is now in his tenth season at White Hart Lane. I would never have put him as being there that long and that number of years certainly suggests a durability/popularity considering how many managers Spurs have gone through in that time.
Whether Tottenham would have let Lennon go is open to question but the winger is likely to be a bit part player again, having only featured for an hour in the games so far, starting in the win at West Ham and then being substituted in the 61st minute.
What attraction Newcastle United would hold for a player of Aaron Lennon’s level is also another unknown quantity.
What isn’t in doubt is that Newcastle desperately need to add creativity and pace to their team, though they will have to look within for those qualities, at least until January.
