Whisper It But…Is The Problem Really Coloccini?

We have now conceded five goals in two home games and this follows the flood of goals that we conceded in the second half of last season.

Can I make an enlightened suggestion that we do not know how to defend? Can I also repeat something that seems to be the equivalent of heresy with some of my fellow supporters….I think the problem lies with Coloccini.

He was badly at fault with the first Manchester City goal when drawn out of position, then stood off the Palace attacker on their second goal when the ball deflected off him and past Tim Krul.

However, the most significant thing is the he lacks leadership qualities in the back four and does not organise his defenders, as shown by the decision of Anita being allowed to mark a six foot tall central Palace defender in the build up to the late equalising goal.

I noted that when he was absent last season Mike Williamson took on the organising role and he was constantly shouting at his back four, and particularly his fellow central defender Mapou, to hold their line.

We saw the success of this in games against Chelsea and Spurs, before the return of Colo saw Willo going back into his shell and the floodgates opening again.

The sign of a good manager is he takes tough decisions and dropping Colo is one of those tough choices.

However, if Palace can stick three past us at home, and let’s be honest, they could have scored more, then I shudder at the prospect of visits to more formidable opponents.

If we cannot win games at home when scoring three goals due to this inability to defend, then the signs are not good.
