The Transfer Deal That Defines The Summer For Newcastle and Sunderland
The signing of Jack Rodwell by Sunderland is one at the heart of the whole transfer business shenanigans.
Clubs such as Newcastle seemingly getting better value, at least on paper, whilst British players come with a massive premium attached.
Many Newcastle fans are no doubt feeling quite smug when you see Siem De Jong arriving for around £6m, along with claims that Remy Cabella came for as little as £7m.
I have a feeling that Jack Rodwell will either be a massive success or total flop.
If he becomes once again that rising star that City paid around £13m for a 21 year old, then the mackems will have some player. However, only seven Premier League starts in two years due to recurring hamstring problems and indifferent form/competition for places, tells its own story.
The thing with Rodwell and other players who have done it in the Premiership already, if they stay fit then you are almost guaranteed to know what you are getting.
Newcastle fans more than any other should appreciate what a mixed bag buying from abroad is – anybody who thinks Riviere, Cabella or whoever is already a success needs to think again.
Only when the proper football starts will we find out – interesting times.
