Sir Bobby Robson 70th Birthday – Newcastle Champions League Win In Germany (Video Special)
As we await the Schalke tournament kicking off on Saturday afternoon, we take you back to Newcastle Champions League glory in Germany.
If ever you needed proof of what a talented manager can do, just look at the players Sir Bobby Robson had at his disposal on the day he celebrated his 70th birthday in 2003.
The win in Rotterdam against Feyenoord had sent Newcastle through to the second group stage but two disastrous results later (NUFC 1 Inter Milan 4 and Barca 3 NUFC 1), United were really up against it.
What made it worse was that with Bellamy and Shearer suspended, United had to face the then powerful Bayer Leverkusen on their turf, with a make-do forward line of 21 year old Shola and 22 year old (allegedly!) Lomana LuaLua.
This was arguably the two players’ finest game as they caused problems all night for the German hosts, two goals for Shola and one for LuaLua, look particularly at Shola’s second goal and the quality (and mobility) he possessed at that age.
United ran out 3-1 winners to give Sir Bobby the perfect 70th present.
Other things to look out for are quality crosses from LuaLua and Laurent Robert for the first and third goals, a lesson to our current set of players.
As for Bobby’s management, look here at the line-up he had which he then fashioned into a winning formula, plus whoever remembers Michael Chopra played in the Champions League!
Newcastle United: Given, Hughes, O’Brien, Bramble, Bernard, Jenas, Dyer, Speed, Robert, Shola (Cort 86), LuaLua (Chopra 86)
Unused Subs: Harper, Griffin, Acuna,Kerr, Steven Caldwell
