Newcastle’s Other Ginger Almost Gets Pardew Out Of Jail
It was Newcastle United’s other ginger, Rolando Aarons, who almost got Alan Pardew out of jail this afternoon, while England’s Jack Colback had a low key afternoon.
Conceding in the first minute of the match through Dwight Gayle after Krul had weakly deflected a shot from outside the box onto the post, United leveled rather fortunately through a deflected goal from Daryl Janmaat, though maximum respect for the Ditch defender who showed a drive towards goal that was sadly lacking from most of his teammates.
However, more desperate defending led to Jason Puncheon putting Palace back in front only three minutes into the second half. The visiting midfielder unmarked a she volleyed across Krul with the keeper again not at his best as he reacted late.
While Newcastle dominated possession it was an action replay of the first half as Pardew’s team failed to show any spark that suggested they would break the opposition down.
However, the introduction of United’s non-natural ginger, Rolando Aarons proved a real turning point, looking lively as soon as he replaced an abysmal Gouffran on 67 minutes.
Only six minutes late Aarons supplied a surprising finish with his head, a rare goal from a corner though Neil Warnock would have been going mental as his player deserted the post where Aarons’ header dropped into the net.
More trickery from Rolando Aarons followed and with only two minutes on the clock he followed up an earlier cross-shot that flashed just wide, by curling a right footer beyond Speroni and onto the far post, striking a defender on the back before Mike Williamson belatedly reacted and forced the ball in from around two inches.
However, more shocking defending allowed Anita to mark the towering Scott Dann and from his knockdown, Wilfried Zaha deservedly gave Palace a point.
