Newcastle In Talks For Toby Alderweireld Transfer

It has emerged this morning that Newcastle United are favourites to bring in Toby Alderweireld ahead of the transfer window’s closure on Monday night.

The twenty five year old Belgian defender is unwanted at Atletico Madrid and desperately looking for a new start.

Alderweireld only started ten La Liga matches last season and some of those featured him at full-back instead of his favoured centre-back position.

This season the defender hasn’t even feature for Atletico on the bench and somebody who clearly has no future with the Spanish Champions.

Despite the lack of club appearances, Alderweireld was first choice for Belgium at the World Cup alongside his old Ajax defensive partner Jan Vertonghen, only missing their thrid group game when rested after they’d qualified through winning their first two matches.

Newcastle were linked with both Alderweireld and Vertonghen before the latter moved to Spurs.

The reports from state that Toby Alderweireld has been convinced to move to Tyneside after talks with his former Ajax teammates, Vurnon Anita and Siem De Jong.

If the move happens then it will initially be on a loan basis with possibility of a permanent deal if it works out. Another key component is whether Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa gets a similar loan deal elsewhere, with Roma now said to be interested.

This would all fit in with Alan Pardew’s comments that his ‘squad was full at the moment’, with players needing to leave if others are to come in.

What is clear after the Palace match is that Newcastle’s defence needs serious strengthening and whether Toby Alderweireld is the player who can do that remains to be seen. If he does move to Tyneside then it would also be unrealistic to expect him to hit the ground running, considering he has had no first team football since the summer in Brazil.
