Newcastle Linked With Connor Wickham Transfer
A strange tale reported today, sees claims that Newcastle United could make an offer for Sunderland’s Connor Wickham.
The Mackems’ striker only has a year left on his contract and at the moment there seems little prospect of Wickham agreeing an extension.
“For me Connor’s situation’s clear – he needs to sign a new contract or we let him go, we sell him, there is nothing in between.”
Having lost Jack Colback for nothing to Newcastle, Sunderland are determined that a forward who cost them £8m won’t run his contract down, though they would be entitled to some compensation due to his age, though nowhere near what his market value would be.
While Wickham had looked woeful for most of his Sunderland stay, after a series of loan arrangements he came back to the Mackems in te second half of last season looking like a footballer, scoring five Premier League goals in nine appearances, including two against Manchester City and once in the win at Chelsea that helped them stay up.
The Mail are reporting that Newcastle have expressed an interest and that if a new contract can’t be sorted then he’d be available for around £6m.
With Newcastle allegedly still looking to buy a very necessary extra forward, the clock is ticking with only two weeks until the season kicks off.
