News today that Mike Ashley is in talks to buy Australian club Newcastle Jets, according to reports in the Australian press.

The Sydney Morning Herald understands that the owner of Newcastle Jets, Nathan Tinkler, approached the Newcastle (United) owner with an offer to sell and preliminary discussions have taken place.

Manchester City’s owners of course also control Melbourne Heart and NUFC are said to have been targeted by the Jets owner, specifically due to the possibility of offering Mike Ashley the opportunity of building a sense of synergy between Newcastle United and their Australian namesake.

Ashley of course has also made major moves recently to expand his retail business empire into the markets both in Australia and New Zealand, with Sports Direct stores planned as well as investing heavily to buy access to online sales in the region. Many fans believing Newcastle United’s recent pre-season tour was linked to that Sports Direct expansion down under.

The Sydney Herald sources say a potential deal is some way off as the Newcastle Jets owner is yet to present formal documents, detailing a full breakdown of expenditure and revenue to potential buyers, including Mike Ashley. However, the United owner is renowned for quickly concluding deals when he wants to.

Another enticement for the Newcastle owner would be potential involvement in the Asian Champions League which could give Ashley a foothold, on and off the pitch, in the lucrative Asian market.

The Newcastle Jets owner Nathan Tinkler also believes that the future of the A-League lies with clubs owned by those who already own clubs in countries such as England;

“What it costs to run an A-League club is really just a transfer fee for these guys at the end of the day. If that can leave the Jets in a better spot by having an owner like that, I think that is a win for the community and everyone involved.

“I think anybody who owns an A-League club or supports an A-League club – that is the future. We’ve a lot of soccer talent in this country and it is the best agreement I think.”
