Siem De Jong Passes Newcastle Medical In Advance Of Transfer Deal

7 years ago

Earlier today, reports claimed that Newcastle were on the verge of signing long-term target Siem De Jong.

Now Sky Sports have said that the Ajax midfielder has passed his Newcastle medical after leaving the Ajax pre-season training camp in Austria.

The deal could be announced as early as Wednesday and a fee of around £6m has been speculated.

A month ago, De Jong said he hoped to speak to Ajax officials to discuss his future, and in the same interview the midfielder revealed that there had been no permanent deal offered by United for his brother Luuk.

Talking to Soccer News in Holland in early June, Siem De Jong said;

“I really don’t know what I will do next season, I’ve spoken with the club but nothing’s sorted.

I am going to talk to Ajax next week and then I will see.

Newcastle United, where my brother played (last season), there has been a little contact with my agent, there was also contact before, but nothing concrete – Newcastle’s a great club.

I don’t know if he (brother Luuk) will be there, he is employed by Borussia Monchengladbach and hasn’t received a contract offer from Newcastle.”

Siem De Jong had five different absences through injury last season; a thigh strain, hamstring (three separate occasions) and Pneumothorax (air trapped between lung and chest…had to Google it!), causing De Jong to miss half the season.

However, a return of 9 goals in 28 games (all competitions) isn’t a bad return for a midfielder, who had scored 56 over the course of the previous four seasons at Ajax.

Aged 25 he is in his prime but the fact that Siem De Jong only has four minutes of international competitive football (brother Luuk has 31 minutes…) and was nowhere near the Dutch World Cup squad maybe puts his overall profile into context.

He certainly has ability but will he be able to translate that into the Premier League – you pays your money and takes your chance.
