Oldham Join Newcastle Under The Grip Of Sports Direct

6 years ago

Back in May we brought you news that the Manchester Evening News (M.E.N) were reporting that Mike Ashley was preparing a deal which would see him having a major involvement at Oldham Athletic, on top of his ownership of Newcastle United and shareholding & merchandising arrangement at Rangers.

It was believed by the M.E.N that the involvement could see;

Newcastle United play a pre-season friendly at Oldham.

Sondico (an Ashley brand) would become shirt sponsor.

A relationship between the two clubs would see young Newcastle players head to Oldham on loan for experience.

Sports Direct would take over the running of the Oldham club shop.

Oldham’s Boundary Park would be given Sports Direct branding.

Following this initial newspaper report, a friendly was indeed set up some weeks ago, with Newcastle United visiting Oldham on Tuesday 15th July, [intlink id=”44382″ type=”post”]with tickets now on sale[/intlink].

In addition, Oldham confirmed recently that Mike Ashley’s Sondico have agreed a five year deal as kit partner, and will supply all home & away and training kit for the players, as well as for supporters to buy.

Today the final pieces of the jigsaw have fallen into place with the announcement that under the terms of a five year deal, Boundary Park will be now known as the monstrous Park.

Also confirmation that Sports Direct will run the club’s shop at the ground.

In addition, will appear on the shirts as the sponsor..

The BBC Sport website also additionally stating;

“As part of the deal, Premier League side Newcastle United will visit the ground on 15 July to play the first match under its new name.”

All of this sums up just where Newcastle United’s place is in Mike Ashley’s empire. Crawling along with no ambition, NUFC’s job is to provide Ashley’s brands with free advertising and promotion, then step in when anything else is needed, such as provide ‘glamour’ opposition for the Newcastle owner’s latest tacky venture.

The only thing we are waiting on is how many players Newcastle will be sending to Oldham.

In May this appeared on The Mag website;

‘The M.E.N also report that as part of the deal, it is likely that Newcastle will play a pre-season friendly at Oldham and that a relationship is on the cards, whereby some of Newcastle’s younger players could head there on loan to gain experience.’

The report says that a five year agreement is proposed which would see Sports Direct take over the running of the club shop, Sondico (an Ashley brand – check out the SJP advertising at the next match) would be the shirt sponsor and the stadium is to be given the Sports Direct branding.’

England, Spain, Italy, Portugal…all maybe out of the World Cup but these classics from @CampoRetro will last the test of time. Now £20 for very limited period, offer ends 5pm Friday.
