Newcastle United Clearance Continues With Ipswich Looking At Two Defenders

The Newcastle United clearance continues with Ipswich Town said to be looking at both Shane Ferguson and Paul Dummett.

Reports down in Suffolk claim that Ipswich are looking at the Newcastle pair as replacements for their prize asset Aaron Cresswell, who has just joined West Ham in a deal that could eventually be worth £7m.

The Chronicle have picked up on the story and are quoting a £1m figure if Ipswich decide to follow up their interest in Shane Ferguson.

However, with the left sided player not even able to get a a game for almost relegated Birmingham last season, it would surely be a case of Newcastle simply being grateful to get the Irishman off the wage bill, yet another young player given a ludicrously long contract that still has two years left to run.

In Paul Dummett’s case, any deal would almost certainly be as a loan signing.

However, my feeling is that Dummett didn’t convince last season as a Premier League player and a recent poll of Newcastle fans on this site resoundingly agreed.

Asked who they would like to see start next season at left-back the voting went 57% Haidara, 35% Santon, 5% Dummett and 3% Colback.

Dummett has ability and the Championship looks his level, whenever he came up against any quality last season he looked very exposed, especially in terms of pace.

With transfer funds no doubt limited, if Alan Pardew can add £1m or more to the kitty for Dummett then he should snap their hands off.
