Newcastle Pass Up Chance to Sign Michu
It has been revealed today that Newcastle United passed up the chance to sign Spanish striker Michu.
With Bafetimbi Gomis, Wilfried Bony and Marvin Emnes now on their books, Swansea had made the player available.
However, the Shields Gazette have reported that United rejected the opportunity to bid for Michu and now his agents have confirmed that the forward is in talks with Napoli, with a view to a loan move.
Michu was a hit in his first season at Swansea when he scored 22 goals and looked a real class act, while last season he suffered with a number of ankle injuries and only made 15 starts for the Welsh club scoring two goals. Though he did manage four goals in Swansea’s Europa League campaign.
Fit again now, Michu has missed Swansea’ pre-season trip to America in order to finalise a move, having accepted that the Welsh club now have such strength in the forward department that opportunities could be limited.
The now 28 year old Spanish striker even ended up making a belated international debut, such was his form for Swansea, playing in a World Cup qualifier against Belarus last October.
Newcastle are reported to have rejected him in favour of other options but a striker with a proven Premier League goals record looks a pretty good bet from where I’m standing, though maybe United weren’t prepared to meet the wages the striker was on at Swansea.
We await with interest to see who other option(s) prove to be.
